Frederick Donald Blake

Frederick Donald Blake RI, RSMA, NEAC (1908-1997)

was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire. At the age of 13 he attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, and later on he studied during the evenings at Goldsmiths College and Brixton School of Building. He worked as a designer and became a full-time painter in the 1960s. Blake exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected a member of prestigious societies such as the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, Royal Society of Marine Artists, and the New English Art Club. He also became President of The Wapping Group of Artists. Blake is best known for his river and coastal scenes, and for his townscapes. Although his art was mainly representational, at times it verged towards abstraction. However, Blake painted a number of pure abstracts, which were probably not exhibited. He signed his work F Donald Blake.
