Walter Nessler

Walter H. Nessler (1912-2001)

was a German born painter, occasional printmaker and sculptor. He was born in Leipzig and studied art in Dresden 1933-35. Nessler was strongly opposed to the rise of the Nazis in Germany and he left the country settling in England in the late 1930s. A period of internment in Liverpool followed the outbreak of war. Walter Nessler exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1945 (when he was lived in Clarendon Road, London W11) and again in 1946, 1947 and 1949 (when he was living in Goldhurst Terrace, London NW6. These paintings were of London subjects and one of the Cotswolds. He also had solo shows with the Leger Gallery in London during the 1940s and exhibited also with The Redfern Gallery. He showed with the John Denham Gallery from 1984. His work is held in several public collections in the UK, including Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Leicester Museum & Art Gallery; The Usher Gallery, Lincoln; and Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon.
