Stuart Hoffman Church

Stuart Hoffman Church (born June, 1932)

was an American painter chiefly of portraits and figure subjects. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son of the artist Fay Hoffman Church (1897-1974). He studied initially at the Boston Museum School and, after moving with his family to the West Coast, he entered the Santa Barbara Art Center in California in 1947. His tutor there was Professor Renzo Fenci, an Italian, who encouraged Stuart Church to enrol at the Academia di Belle Arte in Florence where he studied for two years 1948-50 under Primo Conti, the Italian futurist artist. Church returned to the USA and settled in Oregon. He exhibited at the Portland Art Museum with the Artists of Oregon and at the Larson Gallery in Yashima, Washington State, where he had a solo show in 1951. Church won a National First Prize in the American Legion Poppy Poster Competition and a Gold Key Award in the Scholastic Art Exhibition in Portland, Oregon. He is noted for his fine work in portraiture in oils and paintings of landscapes and the people of Italy during the time he spent in that country.
