Ruskin Spear

Ruskin Spear, RA (1911-1990)

was a well-known painter known especially for his portraits, pub interiors and views of Hammersmith. He studied at Hammersmith School of Art, 1926–30, at the Royal College of Art, 1931-34, and subsequently taught at various art schools, notably at the RCA 1948-77. Spear exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1932 and was elected RA in 1954. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1980. His work is held in many public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Government Art Collection, British Council, Imperial War Museum, the Towner Art Gallery Eastbourne, and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.
