Lilian Neilson
Lilian Neilson (1938-1998)
was a painter and printmaker, mainly of landscapes and interiors who turned more to abstraction later in life. Born in Kirkcaldy she studied painting and drawing at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from 1956-60, and was awarded a travelling scholarship which took her to Paris and Italy in 1961-62. On her return she joined the painter Joan Eardley in Catterline near Stonehaven, they having met at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. After Eardley’s premature death in 1963 Lil Neilson bought a property at Catterline using one half of it as a studio and she continued to live and work in the village before moving to Norfolk for some years. She returned to Scotland in 1986 living in Catterline until her death. Subsequently her work has undergone significant reassessment.
