Kyffin Williams
Sir Kyffin Williams, RA (1918-2006)
was the best-known Welsh landscape and portrait painter of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in Anglesey and studied art at the Slade School in London from 1941, having failed a medical examination to enter service in the Army. He lived in London in the post war years and taught art at Highgate School 1944-73, where he was senior art master. Kyffin Williams exhibited his work at the Royal Academy from 1952 and was elected a full member in 1974. He also became President of the Royal Cambrian Academy. After retiring from teaching he returned to Wales to paint and settled at Pwll Fanogl, near Llanfairpwll, in Anglesey, where he lived until his death. He was knighted in 1999. His work is held in many public collections and is on permanent exhibition in Oriel Mon, Anglesey.
