John Wells

John Clayworth Spencer Wells (1907–2000)

was a well-known abstract artist associated with St Ives. Born in London and spent his young years living in Ditchling, East Sussex. Studied at St Martin’s School of Art 1927-28. Worked as a GP 1936-1945. After WW2, Wells decided to concentrate on his art career full-time. He moved to Newlyn, Cornwall and became involved with the St Ives circle. In 1967 Wells shared a Newlyn studio with his friend, the sculptor Denis Mitchell. Co-founder of the Penwith Society and Crypt Group. A retrospective was held at the Tate St Ives in 2007.
