Gus Cummins

Gus Cummins, RA, LG (born 1943)

is a well-known painter, sculptor and art teacher who has lived in Hastings, East Sussex, for many years. He studied at Sutton School of Art 1958-61, Wimbledon School of Art 1961-64, and at the Royal College of Art 1964-67. He then went on to teach at Hammersmith and Croydon in the 1970s and at Hastings, Wimbledon, Ravensbourne and Chelsea in the 1980s, and at the Royal Academy Schools from the late 1980s. Gus Cummins exhibited with the London Group, becoming a member, and exhibited also with the Royal Academy from 1983. His work has also been shown extensively in the UK and abroad. He was elected RA in 1992 and became a Senior Royal Academician in 2018. He has also shown regularly with the Rye Society of Artists. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Gardner Arts Centre, University of Sussex, Brighton, in 1991, and there have been several other solo shows since then, including at the Metropole Arts Centre, Folkestone 1992, the New Grafton Gallery in London 1993, and the Lamont Gallery, London 1995. In 2005 he won The Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture (worth £10,000) at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work is held in a number of public collections, including the Royal Academy of Arts (diploma work); the Royal College of Art; The Contemporary Arts Society; and the House of Commons.
