Francis Bott

Francis Bott (1904-1998)

was a well-known German born painter, sculptor and designer noted for his surrealist works during the 1930s and 1940s and later for geometric abstraction. He was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and during the 1920s Bott travelled in the United States, Mexico and Austria, painting occasionally and making a living of sorts as a busker. He settled in Paris in 1937 and it was there he fell under the influence of Oskar Kokoschka and Francis Picabia. He exhibited at the Gallerie Maeght Surrealist Show in 1947 organized by Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp. By 1948 he had become interested in abstraction and his work became very much in demand, especially during the 1950s and 1960s, as a leading exponent of the École de Paris. From 1970 he spent most of his time in Switzerland.
