Elena Gaputytė (1927-1991)

Born in Lithuania in 1927, Gaputytė left her homeland during the turmoil of the Second World War before continuing her artistic education at the School of Arts and Crafts in Freiburg, Germany, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris from 1953-56. In 1956 she settled in the United Kingdom, becoming associated with the celebrated artistic community of St Ives, Cornwall, where she established the Sail Loft Gallery in the 1960s. She became a member of the Penwith Society of Arts.

Her practice evolved from painting and sculpture into immersive installation works that incorporated natural materials such as stone, wood, earth and light. These atmospheric works often carried a meditative quality, encouraging contemplation and emotional response while exploring ideas surrounding peace, ritual and cultural memory. She exhibited across the UK at the Marjorie Parr Gallery, Sail Loft Gallery, Upper Grosvenor Galleries, and Camden Arts Centre amongst others.

Alongside her own artistic practice, Gaputytė worked as a curator and educator, maintaining strong connections with both British and Lithuanian artistic circles throughout her career. Today, her work is increasingly recognised within the context of post-war European art, feminist art history and the wider contribution of émigré artists working in Britain during the twentieth century.
