Anthony Curtis

Anthony Curtis, RWA (1928-2018)

was a well-known abstract painter, and early in his career a ceramist too. He was born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and he studied at Loughborough College, 1948–50, at then at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, 1950–51, under William Scott, Kenneth Armitage and Peter Potworowski. He later undertook a postgraduate diploma at London University, 1974–76. In 1957 he was included in Jack Beddington’s well-known book Young Artists of Promise. In 1960–61 he was included in the Arts Council touring show ‘Modern Stained Glass’. His first one-man show was held was held in 1959 at the Bear Lane Gallery, Oxford, and later shows included a part-retrospective at Bloomsbury Gallery, London University. Curtis was a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors, and of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), and also showed his work with the London Group, Redfern Gallery and the Zwemmer Gallery in London. Two examples of his work are held in the collection of the RWA.
