Adrian Ryan

Adrian RYAN (1920-1998)

was a noted painter in oil, pastel and watercolour of landscapes, coastal subjects, still lifes and portraits. He was born in Hampstead, London and studied at the Architectural Association and Slade School of Art 1939-40. He lectured in Painting and Drawing at Goldsmiths College, London 1948-83 and later at Cambridge College of Art and Technology 1973-85. His first one-man show was held at The Redfern Gallery, London W1 1943, one of several held at that gallery. Adrian Ryan exhibited many times at the Royal Academy from 1949 and his work is represented in numerous public collections, including The Tate Gallery, The British Council, Government Art Collection, Albert Museum, Arts Council Collection, the Contemporary Art Society, Cornwall Council, Penlee Art Gallery, Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museums, Atkinson Art Gallery Southport, Colchester & Ipswich Museums, and National Museums Northern Ireland. He found many of his favourite subjects in Cornwall, Wales, the South of France, Brittany and Suffolk.
