Title: ‘The Broken Wall’

Description: An original oil painting on a relatively thick artist’s panel which is in good condition and is still perfectly in plane. The painting isn’t signed or titled but it has what we believe to be the Hagedorn estate reference number verso and, as the owner before us was the artist’s great niece, the provenance is excellent. We believe the painting is likely to date to 1940/41. On reviewing the artist’s recorded exhibits we found reference to a painting titled ‘The Broken Wall’ which fits the image perfectly. If we are right about the date, the damage to the wall may have been caused by enemy bombing or simply from a violet storm. A painting with that title was exhibited by Hagedorn at the Royal Society of British Artists show held in spring/summer 1941, as exhibit number 44, and we think it was probably painted when the artist was living at Lower Feltham in Middlesex. The work was unframed when we acquired it and we have now had it framed to a very high standard, the frame being hand made and hand painted and finished.
