Alistair Grant

Alistair Grant, RBA, ARCA (1925-1997)

was born in London but as his mother was French he spent his childhood in Etaples, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and he returned regularly to the family home there. After service as air-crew wireless operator in Egypt during World War II he entered the Painting School of the Royal College of Art and graduated there in 1950. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy from 1950, mainly showing paintings in the earlier years and chiefly prints during the 1980s. Alistair Grant was a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited there from 1952, and also with the London Group. During the 1950s he painted regularly in London and northern France, and towards the end of the 1950s in Spain, often in or around Blanes on the Costa Brava. He taught print-making at the Royal College of Art from 1955, becoming head of the department in 1970. He was a highly influential printmaker and teacher and his paintings and prints are held in a number of public collections, including the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery Carlisle, and extensively in the Government Art Collection. During the 1950s and 1960s his work was shown frequently at the Zwemmer Gallery in central London. Later in life his work became increasingly abstract.
