Anthony Gross – Chasteaux Corrèze
Artist: Anthony Gross, CBE, RA (1905-1984)
Title: ‘Chasteaux Corrèze’
Description: A framed original etching, signed in pencil by the artist lower right and titled lower centre ‘Chasteaux Corrèze’ and numbered at lower left 230 from an edition of 500 prints. Chasteaux is situated in the Corrèze department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in the centre of southern France, south of the town of Limoges. This etching dates originally from 1929 when it was issued in limited numbers. In 1983 a new Merivale edition of this early etching was hand printed in the artist’s studio from the original plate by his daughter Mary West, comprising 500 prints on 270 gsm Arches paper. These prints were numbered, presumably by Mary West, and most of the prints were then offered for sale unsigned and untitled as by then the artist, Anthony Gross, was nearing the end of his life. However a relatively small number of prints from this edition were pencil signed and titled by Anthony Gross, of which the present work is a fine example. The etching appears to be in excellent original condition although we have not removed the mount for inspection. The frame suits the work and is in good condition.
