Sandra Blow

Sandra Blow, RA (1925-2006)

was known internationally as an abstract painter and printmaker. Born in London she studied at St Martin’s School of Art 1941-46, at the Royal Academy Schools 1946-47 and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome 1947-48. It was in Italy that she met Alberto Burri, who was an important influence on her work. Blow had her first solo show at Gimpel Fils in 1951 and worked in Cornwall 1957-58. In 1961 she won second prize for painting at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition and in the same year began teaching at the Royal College of Art. She was elected RA in 1978 and the Royal Academy gave her a retrospective show in 1994. Her work is represented in a number of public collections including Arts Council Collection, British Council Collection, Government Art Collection, the Royal Academy, the Royal College of Art and National Museums Liverpool.
