Robert Buhler

Robert Buhler, RA, LG (1916-1989)

was a well known painter in oils of portraits, figure subjects and landscapes. He was born in London to Swiss parents. Buhler studied art in Switzerland and later at the St Martins School of Art 1934–36 and at the Royal College of Art 1936. He exhibited widely, including at the New English Art Club from 1945, at the Royal Academy from 1945, the Royal Scottish Academy from 1951, and with The London Group. He was elected ARA 1947 and RA 1956. A major retrospective show was held at the Royal Academy in 1980, and in 1986 his fellow artist Colin Hayes published a book on Buhler. Robert Buhler’s work is held in a number of public collections, including the Tate Gallery, Royal Academy, Southampton Art Gallery, and the National Museum of Wales.
