Norman Basil Town

Norman Basil TOWN (1915-1987)

was brought up in Yorkshire and after the war he studied at the Royal College of Art in London 1946-49. He was friendly with Keith Vaughan and was associated with the Neo Romantic painters of the period. In 1950-51 he exhibited with Vaughan, Michael Ayrton, John Minton and others in the show at Leeds City Art Gallery of Fifteen Contemporary British Painters, and also showed with The London Group. During the 1950s he lived in Surbiton, Surrey and taught graphic design at nearby Wimbledon School of Art for 25 years. He tended to exhibit little during this period. A major show of Town’s work was held in 1991 at The Leicester Galleries in London.
