Gwilym Prichard

Gwilym Prichard (1931-2015)

is a well-known painter of landscapes and still lifes, and he has found his subjects mainly in Anglesey, other areas of North Wales, in Pembrokeshire, and in Provence and Brittany where he lived for some years. He was born in Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth. Prichard trained at Birmingham College of Art 1960-64 and subsequently held several teaching posts before becoming a full time artist in 1973. Prichard has had much success over the years and he has exhibited widely including with the Royal Cambrian Academy (elected member 1970), Welsh Arts Council, Royal National Eisteddfod, North Wales Group. Solo shows have been held with Howard Roberts Gallery, Aberystwyth School of Art Gallery & Museum, and Martin Tinney Gallery. The artist is married to fellow painter Claudia Williams. In his early years he signed his pictures ‘Gwilym Pritchard’. His work is held in many public collections, including Government Art Collection, National Library of Wales, University College of Wales Aberystwyth, Arts Council of Wales, Contemporary Art Society of Wales, Newport Museum and Art Gallery and the University of South Wales. In 2013 a book was published on the artist, ‘A Lifetime’s Gazing’ written by Harry Heuser and Robert Meyrick. It sold out quickly and is currently out of print. Sadly, Gwilym Prichard died on 7th June 2015, aged 84 years.
