Gertrude Hermes

Gertrude Hermes, RA, RE, LG, SWE (1901-1983)

was a well-known sculptor of portrait subjects, wood engraver and book illustrator. She was born at Bickley, Kent and studied at Beckenham School of Art 1919-20 then at Leon Underwood’s School of Painting and Sculpture 1922-26. Married Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1926, divorced 1933. She exhibited widely and is represented in several public collections. Elected SWE 1933, LG (London Group) 1935, RE 1951, ARA 1963 and RA 1971. Gertrude Hermes taught at the Royal Academy Schools, and formerly at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Central School. She lived in London.
