Dennis Creffield

Dennis CREFFIELD (1931-2018)

was a well known painter in oils in the expressionistic tradition, and he is noted also as a fine draughtsman, especially for his views of English cathedrals and abbeys. Born in London, he studied under David Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic 1948-51 and at the Slade School in London 1957-61. Dennis Creffield has exhibited widely, including with the Borough Group and the London Group, of which he was elected a member in 1962. He has had numerous one man shows, including with Leeds City Art Gallery 1966, the Gardner Centre for the Arts at the University of Sussex 1971, Flowers East 2005 (a major retrospective), and ‘Dennis Creffield: Body and Soul’ at the James Hyman Gallery, London 2007. His work is held in many public collections including the Tate Gallery, the Government Art Collection, the Arts Council, Leeds City Art Gallery, the University of Warwick and the University of Brighton.
