Ceri Richards

Ceri Richards, LG (1903-1971)

was known internationally as a painter, printmaker and maker of relief constructions. He was born near Swansea and studied at Swansea School of Art 1921-24 and at the Royal College of Art 1924-27. His first one-man show was held in Swansea in 1930 at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, and the first solo show in London was held in 1942 at the Leger Gallery. Richards was a member of the Surrealist Group 1936 and of the London Group from 1937. He taught at the Chelsea Poly¬technic 1947-57, at the Slade School 1955-58, and at the Royal College of Art 1958-60. Ceri Richards exhibited internationally and is represented in many public collections. He was created CBE 1960 and lived in London.
