Anthony Gross

Anthony Gross, RA, LG (1905-1984)

was a well known painter and etcher of landscapes and figure subjects. He was born in Dulwich, and studied art at the Slade School under Tonks and in Paris at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Gross was appointed an official war artist 1941-45, working prolifically in England, the Middle East, Syria and on the Indian-Burmese border. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy from 1924, and was elected a member of The London Group 1946 and a Royal Academician 1980. In 1968 the Victoria & Albert Museum held a major retrospective show of his work. Anthony Gross is repre¬sented in many public collections, including Tate Gallery, British Museum, the V & A, and the Imperial War Museum. He spent much time living and working in France.
